Concord
Lower East Side Ecology Center
Mission
The purpose of this ecology center was to create a single space for residents, volunteers, students, and visitors to learn and collaborate as a community in recycling, composting, and other sustainable activities.
Vision
The main concept for the Concord Ecology Center was to sort, merge, and connect private and public spaces in the program of the building in order to achieve a flow between them. This, in turn, allows for collaboration and openness while maximizing access through said spaces and the site.
Execution
Through the use of steel, glass, and copper results a contrasting building to the surrounding sites, including the residential buildings, the Williamsburg Bridge, and the upcoming Big U Park by BIG Architects. While maintaining quietness, the building achieves balanced enclosed private spaces, open public spaces, and the ability to control spaces in between through moving façades on each side of the ecology center.
